Happy New Year from everyone at Star Choice Credit Union!

We all can be reminded from the advertisements and commercials of all the cookies we ate over the Holidays... and those commercials also puts a little pressure on us to make a New Year's Resolution. Some of you are probably thinking, "A New Year's Resolution, what's the point? I never keep it anyways!" If you are, you're not alone, a lot of people make the same resolution each year and just can't seem to reach their goals. First and foremost, stop setting yourself up for failure; whether your repetitive resolution is to become more financially responsible or kick the smoking habit for good, here are a few tips on how you can create a realistic New Year's Resolution.

The first and most important factor is creating a resolution that is obtainable. If you have been saying you want to lose 30 pounds for years and can't seem to reach your goal, start with a smaller goal like 10 or 15 pounds. Experts say that within 6 months into the new year, only half of the 33% of Americans who made a New Year's Resolution will still be working towards their goal. Part of this reason is that when we expect to see great results within a certain period of time, and when we don't, we feel like we aren't making any progress and it seems useless to keep going. Remember, it takes 21 days to form a habit, so don't give up right away. Creating smaller, more obtainable goals will help you feel accomplished and will help keep you motivated. If you have tried to quit smoking each  year, try making it your goal to cut the amount of cigarettes you smoke in half this year, then aim to quit for good next year.

Talk about your New Years Resolutions. Tell your family, friends, co-workers, etc. The people who know about your goals are the people who are going to help keep you on track (or give you a hard time if they catch you drinking that soda you said you were giving up!) If you can find a friend or family member who shares the same New Years Resolution as you do, even better!

If one of your New Year's Resolutions is to become more "financially fit", Star Choice Credit Union has plenty of options to help you reach your goal like our savings accounts and our Build it! CD.
